Battle Built: Ramstein program offers free fitness and nutrition support year-round

The 786th Force Support Squadron offers Battle Built, a free fitness and nutrition program for active duty service members, at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center 5 days a week at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, to support the year-round health of Kaiserslautern Military Community members.

The Battle Built classes are free and open to all KMC service members, giving Airmen access to PT-focused exercises, coaching on proper form when lifting weights, daily nutrition education and free one-on-one coaching at no cost.

"The fitness and health industry has gotten really clouded, especially with social media," said Rachael Bell, 786th FSS Battle Built instructor. "I'm essentially a free personal trainer that's constantly here."

Bell, an International Sports Sciences Association-certified trainer and competitive bodybuilder, built the program's curriculum from the ground up. Classes can include, but aren't limited to, running mechanics and two-mile preparation, push-up and sit-up stations, and mock PT tests, with sessions running Monday through Friday. A nutrition class runs daily alongside the physical training.

"I teach you how to actually build a workout plan yourself instead of just looking up random workouts online," Bell said. "How many reps and sets, instead of questioning what you're doing every day."

The program is structured to meet participants wherever they are in their fitness journey. Drop-in classes are leveled in real time, with beginners receiving modified movements and more experienced participants can push harder with advanced instruction, all within the same session.

"They're not trying to barely pass their PT test anymore," Bell said. "They're trying to exceed their scores."

Beyond physical performance, Bell said the program's nutrition component addresses a gap she noticed across the force. Many Airmen train hard, but fail to track what their macronutrients are or know their daily caloric intake, both are vital components in ensuring they are effectively meeting their fitness goals.

"They may really excel in PT, but they don't fix the core problem, which is eating habits," she said. "You don't have to starve yourself to lose weight and you can actually enjoy the process instead of looking at it as a punishment."

Bell is scheduled to PCS in October and wants to ensure the program is established firmly enough to outlast her tenure.

"I just want it to live past me," Bell said. "Whoever comes next can take it over and actually have the drive to keep it going."

Battle Built classes are free, require no sign-up and are open to all KMC service members at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center. For those interested in one-on-one coaching or a personalized meal and workout plan, Bell is available for individual sessions at no cost.
