For 250 years, the U.S. Navy has projected power across oceans, defended freedom around the globe, and mastered operations in some of the world's most challenging environments.
Soon, it will add another accomplishment to the list. In a first-of-its-kind event, NASCAR will bring one of America's most iconic sports to Naval Base Coronado as part of the Navy and nation's 250th anniversary celebration, creating a unique intersection of military heritage, innovation, and American culture.
Naval Base Coronado will host NASCAR for the Craftsman Truck Series, the United Rentals Driven to Serve 250 (NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series), and the Anduril 250 (NASCAR Cup Series) 19-21 June.
Qualcomm Circuit is a 16-turn, 3.4-mile track built directly on the base. It is a highly technical, cinematic course featuring a backdrop of an aircraft carrier and fighter jets. The race will serve as a centerpiece event during the Navy 250 commemoration, highlighting the service's rich history while introducing new audiences to the men and women who continue to serve today.
"Hosting a NASCAR race of this magnitude on Naval Base Coronado is unprecedented," said Capt. Loren "Wookie" Jacobi, commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado. "It allows us to share the Navy's 250-year legacy of warfighting excellence with NASCAR fans and the American public. This weekend is about honoring our heritage, but it's also a chance to showcase the incredible dedication, precision, and skill of the Sailors who operate in high-stakes environments here, and all around the world, every single day."
The historic venue provides a fitting backdrop for a celebration of two uniquely American institutions. Both the Navy and NASCAR trace their success to teamwork, precision, technical expertise, and a relentless pursuit of excellence under pressure. While one operates aircraft carriers and advanced warfighting skills and the other fields high-performance race cars, both demand discipline, preparation, and trust in the people around them.
"Seeing these cars race right next to our aircraft and ships is going to be surreal," said Aviation Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Haaken Ahiers, a Sailor stationed at Naval Base Coronado. "In the Navy, especially on a flight deck, our survival and success rely on split-second communication and teamwork. You look at a NASCAR pit crew, and it’s the exact same mindset, everyone executing their specific job flawlessly so the entire team can succeed."
As the Navy marks its 250th year of service, the celebration is designed not only to honor the past, but also to inspire the next generation, and integrate the American public with its services.
"This milestone is a celebration of our legacy, but it is fundamentally about our future," Jacobi said. "The professionalism of our Sailors combined with the sheer excitement of NASCAR we hope will inspire a deep sense of national pride in attendees and viewers alike."
Naval Base Coronado is home to a diverse collection of Navy missions, including aviation, special warfare, expeditionary forces, and fleet support operations. Hosting a nationally televised sporting event on the installation offers a rare opportunity to showcase those missions to millions of viewers across the country.
For NASCAR, the partnership provides an opportunity to connect with military communities and celebrate a longstanding relationship between motorsports and the armed forces.
"NASCAR and the U.S. military share a deep, enduring bond built on mutual respect, a passion for high-performance engineering, and a commitment to service," said Amy Lupo, NASCAR San Diego President. "Bringing the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series to Naval Base Coronado to help celebrate the Navy's 250th anniversary is an absolute honor. We are thrilled to bring the excitement of racing directly to the men and women who defend our country, and to broadcast this incredible military backdrop to our fans worldwide."
Throughout race weekend, fans can expect more than just action on the track. Organizers are planning displays, demonstrations, and interactive experiences designed to showcase Navy capabilities, honor service members and veterans, and tell the story of a service that has helped shape American history for two and a half centuries.
For one weekend, Naval Base Coronado will become the place where America's sea service and one of its most beloved sports come together, proving that even after 250 years, the Navy can still find new ways to make history.
NASCAR San Diego Weekend will take place at Naval Base Coronado June 19–21, bringing together Sailors, service members, NASCAR fans, industry partners, and the local community for a unique event highlighting the connection between the Navy, innovation, teamwork, and American motorsports culture.
