    Safe choices, strong summer
JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas— While the dangers are often overlooked, the Center for Disease Control reports that heat was a contributing factor in 1,837 U.S. deaths in 2025. Understanding how to protect oneself against these hazards is a critical part of summer safety.

Through preparation and vigilance, JBSA experts emphasize that taking simple precautions such
as staying hydrated, using sunscreen, practicing safe grilling habits, and remaining weather aware can help prevent injury and ensure a safe summer season. “Don’t get complacent,” That’s the message from Senior Airman Cesar Gonzalez, 902d Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter. “Whether it’s heat related injuries, driving fatigue, water safety or alcohol related incidents, always take those extra precautions and take your time making the right decisions.”

Texas summers routinely bring high temperatures, creating increased risks for heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration for those who work or spend extended periods outside.

“The humidity is what makes it difficult,” said Samuel Gutierrez, 12th Operations Support Squadron weather flight lead meteorological technician. “Even when the temperature isn’t extreme, the heat index can climb quickly and make conditions much more dangerous.”

Summer weather threats extend beyond extreme heat. Hurricane season, which runs from June
through November, can impact travel plans and create dangerous conditions. Being aware of potential weather hazards before and during travel can help Airmen and their families make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary risks.

“We are in hurricane season. Even if you don’t live on the coast, it’s important to stay informed and avoid putting yourself in harm’s way while traveling,” said Gutierrez.

The choices made during off duty activities can have a lasting impact on individuals, families, and the mission. By exercising sound judgment and taking steps to prevent mishaps, Airmen can protect themselves and those around them.

“The best summer memories are the ones that everyone makes it home from,” said Gonzalez.
