    3rd Marine Logistics Group

CAMP KINSER, Okinawa, Japan — U.S. Marines with 3rd Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 35, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, received hands-on maintenance and repair training on the AN/PRC-160 radio system from technicians with L3Harris Technologies.

The training was conducted through a partnership between V2X, a mission support and logistical operations company, and L3Harris Technologies, a defense contracting company responsible for producing communication systems for the military. The training was aimed at reducing repair timelines and enhancing maintenance capabilities across 3rd MLG by targeting a major choke point in the repair process.

Historically, Marines have faced repair timelines exceeding 180 days when damaged AN/PRC-160 radios required shipment to manufacturer-certified technicians for maintenance, or Marines would be forced to wait until warranties expired to work on broken radios. In addition to extended wait times, the process often generated significant transportation and administrative costs associated with moving sensitive equipment between operational units and overseas repair facilities.

“The team has come in here, from Brisbane and from Rochester specifically, to do two major activities,” Paul Buckingham, Director of Sustainment Programs at L3Harris Technologies, said. “One is to simply fix broken radios, but at the same time they’re here to impart as much technical knowledge as they can to the Marines in the Electronic Maintenance Company that have the responsibility for carrying out the repair to those assets.” “Fixed radios are the intended outcome, but one of the more primary goals is that knowledge transfer from the original equipment manufacturer to the Marines, so that when we go home, after two weeks, the Marines are left with far more knowledge on how to fault to isolate, test, and repair the radios, so they're in a much stronger position by themselves.”

This new initiative is a critical first step in a broader effort to increase organic radio repair capabilities within 3rd MLG, Marines attended the training said. Equipping Marines with the technical knowledge, diagnostic procedures and specialized equipment required to maintain the radios without the need for external lines of supply will enable Marines to be capable and proficient in diagnosing issues, performing repairs, and fielding radios, forming a more independent and capable logistics element.

“It's a force multiplayer,” said Staff Sgt. Karim Keita, an electronics maintenance staff noncommissioned officer in charge with 3rd Maintenance Battalion, “We're talking about our sustainment capability when we deploy moving out in field level environment — they have the capability to repair things down to the third Echelon.” “What this means is they’re able to replace individual circuit board components within that radio.”

This capability is particularly valuable in contested or austere environments where access to traditional supply chains, transportation networks and contractor support may be limited or unavailable.

The partnerships between 3rd MLG, V2X, and L3Harris is an invaluable strategic network providing Marines with essential equipment and maintenance capabilities that increase mission readiness, reduce costs and improve support to forward-deployed units. The training represents a significant investment in the technical proficiency of Marines with 3rd Maintenance Battalion and reinforces the 3rd MLG's ability to sustain military action across the Indo-Pacific region.
