ORUZGAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Suspected insurgents launched a mortar attack directed at a polling site in Khas district, Oruzgan province Sept. 18.

A public service announcement broadcasted later in the day revealed the Taliban admitted responsibility for the mortar attack.

Afghan and coalition forces present at the polling site returned fire upon the mortar emplacement after the insurgents began the barrage of the poll site.

In the aftermath, one Afghan female was injured due to the mortar attack and transported to a coalition forces’ medical facility in the area where she was treated for her wounds.

“The goal of the insurgency is to prevent the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan from establishing governance and stability,” said Maj. Paul Oliver, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan spokesman. “It is very fortunate the local national female received medical treatment for her injuries.”
