KABUL, Afghanistan - A month and a half after clearing operations began in the former insurgent stronghold of Safaar, Afghan and coalition forces have brought education back to the children of Garm Ser District.
More than 60 children, including five girls, attended the opening of the Safaar tent school Saturday in this former insurgent logistics hub in Helmand province.
An Afghan National Army company commander and a coalition linguist volunteered to teach the first lessons. The opening was such a success - according to Safaar citizens - that they have asked for an afternoon session to be added to the schedule to allow more children to participate.
Afghan and coalition forces began clearing operations Aug. 5 in Safaar to rid the area of improvised explosive devices and insurgents.
The area was known as a hub for drug production and trafficking as well as for dealing in weapons.
"This is a great example of providing for the future of Afghanistan," said U.S. Air Force Col. James Dawkins, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "This was something the people of Safaar asked for and it was delivered through the combined efforts of Afghan and coalition partners."
