FORT McCOY, Wis. -- Maj. Gen. Joseph Ricciardi, senior commander of U.S. Army Garrison Fort McCoy, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony near the installation’s Main Gate on May 19, 2026. The event highlighted the completion of the new Microgrid project situated near the installation’s entrance.
A microgrid is a self-contained electrical grid with clearly defined areas that can manage both energy generation and consumption within its area. In this case, the electricity is generated by solar panels on site. Fort McCoy’s microgrid is a Public/Private partnership between the installation and Xcel Energy Corporation.
Ricciardi was joined by Garrison Commander Col. Sheyla Baez-Ramirez, Command Sgt. Maj. James Riddle and Mrs. Liane Haun, Director of Public Works, as well as representatives from Xcel Energy.
The $1.4 million project with its battery backup can provide a minimum of 14 days of continuous operations for facilities in the vicinity of Main Gate in the event of main grid power loss, keeping critical missions running, supporting combat, training, and humanitarian operations.
The project is part of the 2025 Army Installations Strategy’s goal to build resiliency and allow for the installation to be able to “respond to unforeseen disruptions and quickly recover while continuing critical activities.” It is also another outstanding example of the Department of War and U.S. Army’s investment in the modernization of Fort McCoy’s infrastructure.
"Today, we celebrate a landmark achievement—the successful completion of Fort McCoy’s first microgrid," Maj. Gen. Ricciardi said. "This is not just a technological upgrade; it is a fundamental enhancement of our strategic readiness."
