GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. – Airmen assigned to the 319th Reconnaissance Wing observed National Police Week May 10 to May 15, 2026, here.
The annual observance was established by former President John F. Kennedy in 1962 and is dedicated to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
The 319th Security Forces Squadron hosted several events in honor of the week's significance and to foster camaraderie among current defenders.
“It's important we recognize the sacrifices of fallen officers and their families,” said Senior Airman Devin Chapman, military working dog handler for the 319th SFS. “Police week allows us to do that while also giving us an opportunity to laugh and make memories with each other.”
Events for the week included a memorial service, a 24-hour foot march, a 3.5-mile obstacle course, a k-9 and weapons demonstration and a competition between 319th SFS Defenders and 319th Civil Engineer Squadron fire fighters.
Master Sgt. Rebecca Cochran, superintendent of training for the 319th SFS, said National Police Week observances foster pride in the role of a law enforcement officer and reinforces the seriousness of their work, especially for younger Defenders.
“We need to take our training seriously and care for each other," said Cochran. “When we wear our badge at home and down range, life is on the line.”
Cochran and Chapman both emphasized the physical and mental challenges faced by officers, and how events like National Police Week can foster community support for officers.
“Our job is not easy,” said Chapman. “But no matter what, we stay professional and serve our community proudly.”
