Yeoman 2nd Class Mary Wheeler drives operational readiness and administrative excellence at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Corona Division.
As the Administration Leading Petty Officer and Command Pay and Personnel Administrator, Wheeler oversees multiple critical functions supporting NSWC Corona’s military personnel and operations. Known as the command’s subject matter expert on active-duty and reserve personnel policies, Wheeler reviews and finalizes correspondence, oversees compliance reporting, keeps the team on track to meet mission-critical deadlines, and manages the timely onboarding and offboarding of NSWC Corona military personnel — ensuring operations remain uninterrupted during transitions.
Wheeler also fills two key roles as the Individual Medical Readiness Coordinator, verifying that Sailors are healthy and medically fit to serve, and the Enlisted Watchbill Coordinator, overseeing the proper execution of daily colors in accordance with Navy customs.
“Being a Yeoman allows me to work with senior Sailors to gain their knowledge, but also allows me to work with junior Sailors to guide them through their desired journey,” said Wheeler. “I’m very proud of being the sole admin support here.”
Hailing from Summerville, S.C., Wheeler began her journey with the Navy in January 2022, after graduating from high school where she participated in Air Force Junior ROTC. Following boot camp and Yeoman “A” School, she served aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) for three years, completing her first deployment before transferring to NSWC Corona in February 2025.
“My shipmates, past and present, encourage me to step out of my comfort zone,” said Wheeler. “I have challenged myself to become a better leader.”
Looking ahead, Wheeler said she plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration beginning this summer while continuing her tour at NSWC Corona. Through her dedication to continuous learning and leadership, Wheeler is poised to leave a lasting impact on the command and the Sailors she guides.
NSWC Corona Division has provided analysis and assessment for the Navy since 1964. With expertise in gauging the Navy’s warfighting capability, NSWC Corona is a leader in data, analytics, visualizations, digital environments, engineering, and leveraging technology to bridge and integrate the Navy's data silos – enabling informed decision-making by the warfighter. With more than 4,000 scientists, engineers, Sailors, technicians, and support staff, NSWC Corona is located in Norco, California, with two California detachments in Fallbrook and Seal Beach and personnel in 14 additional locations.
