Military and civilian medical personnel at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Guam recently participated in specialized obstetrics and gynecology training focused on advancing maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) capabilities and improving patient care outcomes.
U.S. Air Force Maj. Kelsey White, a maternal-fetal medicine physician assigned to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, led the training while on temporary additional duty at USNH Guam during the week of Oct. 14. U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nelson DeSouza, an OB-GYN provider, coordinated the initiative to enhance in-house capabilities and reduce reliance on external referrals.
Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Arlesha Cooper-Revish and Edwin Ula, both ultrasound technicians, participated in the hands-on training, which emphasized advanced ultrasound techniques and maternal-fetal assessment skills. The focused setting allowed for direct instruction and skill development, strengthening both technical proficiency and clinical decision-making.
Through enhanced screening ability, providers are better able to identify potential fetal abnormalities and complications earlier in pregnancy. The improved diagnostics allow patients to receive timely care locally, reducing the need for off-island medical transfers.
"The goal was to cut down on having to separate families and from utilizing resources unnecessarily," said Cooper-Revish.
By improving local diagnostic and treatment capabilities, the hospital strengthens operational readiness and ensures timely, effective care for families. USNH Guam continues to prioritize targeted training initiatives that enhance clinical readiness, support mission requirements, and improve patient outcomes across the Pacific Region.
