MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif.— A recognition ceremony was held to formally honor several Marines and squadrons from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing for their achievements in the 2026 Marine Corps Aviation Association (MCAA) Awards. The event underscored the continues excellence, dedication, and warfighting readiness of the wing’s aviation units and personnel. The awards recognize exceptional contributions to aviation operations, flight safety and overall mission accomplishment across Marine Corps aviation units. The MCAA awards also serve to highlight the dedication, skill and leadership exhibited by the Marines serving in these critical roles. Among the top recipients was Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 462, which earned the prestigious Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron of the Year award. The award is named after Gen. Keith B. McCutcheon, who is revered as the “Father of Marine Corps Helicopter Aviation” and was responsible for transforming the helicopter from a niche rescue tool into a primary weapon of war. The award is given for the most outstanding performance during high-intensity training cycles and operational deployments. Additionally, the following units were recognized for their outstanding performance:
Individual Honors: In addition to squadron-level recognition, several individual Marines from 3rd MAW were awarded for their excellence in leadership, flight safety and operational effectiveness. Sgt. John P. Parker, a crew chief with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 161, earned the Marine Aircrew of the Year award. The award is named after Master Gunnery Sgt. Danny L. Radish, a legendary Marine who set the standard for tactical proficiency and total thousands of flight hours during his extensive career as an enlisted aircrewman. The award is presented to a Marine enlisted aircrew member who has made the most significant contribution to Marine Corps aviation through professional achievement, leadership, and operation excellence. “Receiving this award is an absolute honor, but standing up here alone doesn't feel right,” Parker said, “This recognition belongs to the entire flight line, the junior crew chiefs, maintainers, and the pilots who trust us with the mission. This is a collective win for not myself but for the entire squadron, and I accept this on their behalf.” Other notable awardees include Master Sgt. Rikki Smith-Lewis, an aviation supply specialist with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39. She earned the Aviation Supply Marine of the Year award for her mastery of aviation supply chain management, ensuring critical aeronautical material reached the flight line with maximum efficiency. “It’s humbling, and I’m proud of it,” Smith-Lewis said. “At this point in my career, I see it as a reflection of the Marines I work with every day. I know the potential they have, and being able to watch them put in the work and turn that into real success, that’s what means the most to me. I’ve had the opportunity to lead some great Marines, and this recognition represents what we’ve been able to accomplish as a team. Additionally, the following Marines were recognized for their outstanding performance:
Highlighting Operational Excellence: The success of 3rd MAW at the MCAA Awards highlights the continued growth and excellence of Marine aviation. As one of the Marine Corps’ largest and most dynamic aviation wings, 3rd MAW is integral to the readiness and success of U.S. military operations across the globe. With a diverse array of squadrons, including those flying attack, transport and reconnaissance aircraft, 3rd MAW continues to set the standard for Marine aviation excellence. “The Marines should be proud of themselves,” said Maj. Gen.RobertBrodie, commanding general of 3rd MAW. “Regardless of the rank, uniform, [or] patch, this is the greatest warfighting organization in the entire world. There is no Wing in the world that can bring, aggregate, and destroy the enemy through fire, maneuver, command, control, and all the stuff we do with our Marine Wing Support Squadrons. No one can bring combat power to bear like 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.” As the MCAA Awards continue to highlight excellence in Marine aviation, the achievements of 3rd MAW’s Marines serve as a reminder of the critical role they play in supporting national security objectives and maintaining air superiority.
