ACCRA, Ghana — U.S. and Ghana Armed Forces medical personnel concluded the Medical Readiness Exercise (MEDREX) that was part of African Lion 26, May 8.

From April 20 to May 8, approximately 25 U.S. service members worked alongside Ghana Armed Forces medical professionals at the 37th Military Hospital.

U.S. participants included personnel from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Dental Health Activity–Rheinland Pfalz and the North Dakota National Guard.

Medical services and training included obstetrics and gynecology, general and trauma surgery, critical and intensive care, anesthesia, emergency medicine and dental services.

"Each year it is our assessment that we get better and better, and this relationship grows stronger and stronger," said U.S. Army Col. Claude Burnett, obstetrician-gynecologist senior medical officer, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, at the closing ceremony.

"The power of this relationship is that when we come here, this is a bi-directional relationship. We learn while we are here, and our Ghanaian counterparts learn from us as well."

Led by the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), the MEDREX prepared military health professionals to operate effectively outside traditional clinical settings while strengthening interoperability between U.S. and Ghanaian medical teams.

“A medical readiness exercise provides our medical professionals the opportunity to train alongside Ghanaian partners in resource-constrained environments,” said U.S. Army Col. Scot Tebo, command surgeon for SETAF-AF.

“Working together strengthens our clinical readiness, improves interoperability and enhances our ability to deliver effective care during future operations.”

This year’s MEDREX proved highly successful, with participants seeing 2,092 patients throughout the exercise. The mission enabled U.S. and Ghanaian medical personnel to collaborate in operational environments, enhancing clinical readiness, interoperability and adaptability.

Throughout the exercise, U.S. and Ghanaian medical personnel worked side by side providing patient care while exchanging expertise across multiple specialties, strengthening professional relationships and improving readiness in operational environments. The exercise reinforced enduring ties between the United States and Ghana, building trust and enhancing both nations’ ability to respond to shared challenges.

African Lion 2026 (AL26) is U.S. Africa Command's largest annual joint exercise, designed to strengthen collective security capabilities of the U.S., African nations and global allies. Co-led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) from April 20 to May 8, 2026, and hosted in Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, AL26 involves over 5,600 personnel from more than 40 nations, using innovation to drive partner-led regional security.
