SAN VICENTE, Sta. Ana, Cagayan, Philippines — Laughter and energy filled the grounds of San Vicente Elementary School as U.S. service members and Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel joined students in games, activities and celebration during a “Bundle of Joy” ceremony supporting Exercise Balikatan 2026, April 22.

The ceremony brought together service members, educators and local leaders in a setting that extended beyond a traditional engagement. Students lined the school grounds as participants organized games and activities, creating an environment that encouraged interaction and connection. What began as a structured event evolved into a shared communal experience, with service members and students moving side by side throughout the day.

As part of the engagement, service members delivered more than 100 science textbooks, solar panels, a television, supporting cables and laptops to the school. The equipment and materials are intended to directly support classroom instruction.

Throughout the event, service members moved beyond formal exchanges, engaging directly with students through games and activities that transformed the ceremony into a shared experience. From organized races to informal conversations, the atmosphere reflected a deliberate effort to build trust and strengthen relationships at the community level.

“As we move from site to site across the country, it is clear that giving and showing up for communities is what builds strong teams and lasting partnerships,” said Lt. Kevin Gilchrist, a chaplain assigned to 9th Communication Battalion, I Marine Information Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

The ceremony also reinforced the relationship between U.S. forces and their Armed Forces of the Philippines counterparts, who worked alongside them throughout the engagement. Together, participants coordinated efforts, interacted with students and supported the distribution of materials, highlighting the cooperative nature of the mission.

“Today’s ceremony is not just about the supplies. It is about the relationships being built and the lasting impact they will have on our students,” said Emma Bumanglag, principal of San Vicente Elementary School.

As the ceremony concluded, students returned to families carrying new shared experiences. The interactions throughout the day left a lasting impression, reflecting the role of partnership in shaping both immediate outcomes and long-term relationships.

Balikatan is a longstanding annual exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. military that represents the strength of our alliance, improves our capable combined force, and demonstrates our commitment to regional peace and prosperity.
