MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – U.S. marines with Combat Logistics Regiment 17 (CLR-17), 1st Marine Logistics Group, officially assumed authority of the Southern Border Mission from 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, during a transfer of authority ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, April 23, 2026.
During their deployment, 7th Marine Regiment established a strong operational foundation. The unit was instrumental to the mission by maintaining a consistent presence and providing critical monitoring support that enhanced overall border security. Now, CLR-17 will build upon these contributions, leveraging its expansive logistical and operational capabilities to sustain and expand the mission's effectiveness.
Marines and sailors with CLR-17 bring unique military capabilities, especially when working with joint and interagency partners. They will continue to execute extensive mounted and dismounted patrols, as well as critical air reconnaissance missions. These operations provide vital detection and monitoring capabilities, directly supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
“Task Force Leviathan [CLR-17] is honored to assume this mission and build upon the strong foundation established by Task Force Ripper [7th Marine Regiment],” said Col. Christina Zimmerman, the commanding officer of CLR-17. “Our marines and sailors are prepared to execute this mission with discipline, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to securing our nation's border in support of Joint Task Force-Southern Border and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, while working alongside our joint and interagency partners.”
The success of the Southern Border Mission relies heavily on the integration of joint and interagency capabilities. CLR-17 coordinates daily with CBP, merging the Marine Corps' expeditionary ground patrol capabilities and the Army's aviation assets with CBP's federal law enforcement authority. Ultimately, this joint effort provides CBP agents with the critical situational awareness they need to execute their law enforcement duties, creating a robust, multi-domain network that secures the southern border.
U.S. Northern Command is working side by side with the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
