FORT HOOD, Texas — Soldiers traded their weapons for golf clubs for a day at the 14th annual Ben Hogan Golf Classic, hosted by the Ben Hogan Foundation and Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, April 27 at The Courses of Clear Creek.

The event was a four-person scramble, with free breakfast and lunch, cornhole with the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program and raffle giveaways.

“We gather today under the name of a man who understood discipline, resilience and quiet determination: Ben Hogan,” said Fred Reynolds, president of the Ben Hogan Foundation Board of Directors, during remarks. “His was defined not only by excellence, but by perseverance through adversity, by focus in the face of challenge and by the unwavering commitment to something greater than the moment.

“Today we come together with a shared purpose, to recognize, to honor and to remember and celebrate,” he added. “This is more than a golf tournament. It is a moment of collective gratitude to those who serve and to those who have served. We offer more than applause. We offer our deepest respect.”

Command Sgt. Maj. John McDwyer, III Armored Corps and Fort Hood command sergeant major, gave remarks as well, recognizing the Soldiers, civilians and the Ben Hogan Foundation for facilitating and organizing the event.

“I’d like to say thank you to the Ben Hogan Foundation,” McDwyer said, during his remarks. “We love what you do. We love working with you. We look forward to continuing this in the future.”

Before the Soldiers headed off to play golf, they were reminded of the rules of the scramble, with a slight addendum from McDwyer.

“All the grass is mine,” he said smiling as other Soldiers laughed. “Step foot on the grass, and each hole is a two-stroke penalty.”

The Soldiers played each hole three teams at a time.

The conditions were perfect for a day of golf, allowing Maj. Marcienne Anderson, Operational Evaluation Command, to have an “excellent” start, he said.

“I think it’s great that somebody like Ben Hogan is providing an opportunity for Soldiers to play for free, but also it’s good for other Soldiers to connect from across installation that would never really be with each other except during our training exercises.”

Another Soldier, 1st Lt. Joseph Egbo, 13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command, agreed.

“I think this is an awesome opportunity to relax a little bit, have some friendly competition, get some prizes … have a good time and switch it up a little bit from the mundane,” he said. “You get to meet new people that you definitely wouldn’t have met in another situation. You get to have some camaraderie with people that do the same thing as you.”
