KADENA AIR BASE, Japan — U.S. service members and civilians participated in a ribbon walk, sunrise yoga session and other events throughout April representing their ongoing support support of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month’s mission at Kadena Air Base, Japan, April 1-30.
Observed annually, SAAPM is dedicated to raising awareness, strengthening prevention efforts and reinforcing support systems for individuals affected by sexual assault and harassment. The 18th Wing Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program uses the month to educate the base community on available resources and reporting options while promoting a culture of trust, respect and accountability.
The SAPR program provides confidential support, advocacy and guidance to service members, Department of Defense civilians and eligible beneficiaries impacted by sexual assault. Victim advocates assist individuals through the reporting process and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect.
“We give them the information they need so they understand their options, and then we empower them to make their own decisions,” said Terra Flahardy, 18th Wing SAPR victim advocate. “Our goal is to help restore a sense of control and support them every step of the way.”
In addition to supporting survivors, SAPR personnel advise leadership to ensure cases are handled professionally and in accordance with established policies.
Throughout the month, Kadena hosted events designed to encourage engagement and increase awareness in a supportive environment. Activities such as the ribbon walk and sunrise yoga provided opportunities for participants to reflect, show support and learn more about available resources without stigma.
“These events remind people they are not alone,” said Airman 1st Class Jesse Gomez, 18th Munitions Squadron precision-guided munitions technician. “They help build a sense of unity and reinforce that support and resources are always available.”
While SAAPM highlights prevention and awareness efforts each April, SAPR services are available year-round. Kadena leaders emphasize that continued education, open dialogue and community involvement are essential to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all Airmen.
