FORT CARSON, Colo. — The 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) has begun relocating from Stuttgart, Germany, to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz in Baumholder as part of a long-term move set to continue through 2028.

Activated in 1952, the battalion has been stationed in Europe since 1953, when it deployed to Flint Kaserne in Bad Tölz, Germany. After the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the unit moved to Panzer Kaserne in Stuttgart in 1991 to be closer to U.S. European Command. The battalion has played a central role in U.S. special operations throughout the Cold War and into the modern era.

“The departure of 1-10 SFG(A) from Panzer Kaserne marks the end of a proud chapter and the beginning of another,” said Lt. Gen. Gil Ferguson, commanding general of U.S. Army Special Operations Command. “For decades, the Green Berets and Paratroopers from 1st Battalion have strengthened our alliances, stood watch on the continent, and answered the call wherever it led. Their move to Baumholder is not simply a change of location — it is a deliberate step forward, positioning this force to remain agile, ready and lethal in support of our partners and our nation. Thanks to support of the Stuttgart community, the legacy they leave behind will endure, carried forward by the same professionalism, discipline and quiet resolve that will define their next chapter.”

The relocation will provide Special Operations Forces with significantly expanded training space and modernized facilities to support readiness. Baumholder’s training area is roughly 18 times larger than the unit’s footprint in Stuttgart, enabling more realistic and comprehensive training opportunities.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz officials said ongoing installation improvements demonstrate the Army’s commitment to supporting Soldiers and families. More than 60 projects, including 40 renovations and 29 new construction efforts, are underway or in planning. The work includes modernized administrative spaces, barracks upgrades, new townhomes and construction of a new elementary school and middle/high school.

Col. Nathanael Joslyn, commander of 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), said the relocation marks a strategic turning point for both the organization and its regional relationships.

“First Battalion’s move to Baumholder is an important milestone for our unit and the communities we serve,” Joslyn said. “Relocating allows us to modernize our facilities and improve our ability to train and support our soldiers, while also continuing our tradition of partnership with our German hosts. Strengthening these bonds ensures we remain ready to meet the challenges ahead and reinforces our commitment to security and cooperation in the region.”

According to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District officials, many of Baumholder’s renovations preserve historic features of pre–World War II structures while updating interior spaces to modern standards. Additional range modernization projects, developed with German Bundeswehr partners, will expand shoot houses, small arms ranges and other training capabilities essential for maintaining SOF readiness.

The battalion’s transition to Baumholder highlights the installation’s continued value to U.S. Army operations in Europe. Its history and growing infrastructure make Baumholder a reliable location that supports future security efforts within the U.S. European Command area of responsibility.
