WASHINGTON, D.C. — Three Soldiers assigned to Joint Task Force–District of Columbia (JTF-DC), operating under the 260th Special Purpose Brigade in support of the DC Safe and Beautiful mission, rendered immediate assistance to a civilian involved in a vehicle collision in Washington D.C., April 10, 2026.
Prior to formation for physical training, 1st Sgt. Sahib Singh and Staff Sgt. Clayton Schmidt identified a nearby vehicle collision and quickly ran across the street to provide aid to the civilian involved. “At that moment, the safety of the individual was our top priority,” said Singh. “As a Soldier, responding to those in need is second nature—the Army values instilled in me have embedded a reflex to react and aid anyone without hesitation.”
Recognizing the need for additional support, Singh flagged down a U.S. Park Police officer in the area. The Soldiers coordinated with responding authorities to ensure Metropolitan Police and emergency medical services arrived on scene. Once EMS personnel assumed care, the civilian was transported by ambulance for further evaluation. At the same time, Spc. Ashley Griffin, who was traveling behind in them her own vehicle, witnessed the collision and safely maneuvered to avoid obstructing traffic after ensuring the situation was being handled.
“As I was driving on the ramp, I observed the vehicle collide,” said Griffin. “There were no cars around, and I wanted to ensure the driver was safe.”
Schmidt emphasized the urgency of their response. “The right thing to do was make sure the civilian was okay, especially after noticing he was slumped over in the vehicle,” he said.
Though not their first real-world response, the Soldiers credited their training and instincts for guiding their actions. Singh encouraged others to act decisively while maintaining awareness. “React within the scope of your ability while always considering the safety of yourself and others,” he said. “It was early in the morning, no one else was around—it was simply the right thing to do.”
The Soldiers’ actions reflect the Army values and the National Guard’s commitment to being ready, responsive, and engaged in the communities they serve. JTF-DC is a part of the community that they serve. The success is measured by the safety and well-being of the neighbors and fellow citizens. It's committed to contributing positively to the District of Columbia.
