Union City, Ga., March 31, 2026 – U.S. Army Capt. Channda Mitchell has been selected for the second consecutive year to represent Team Army at the 2026 Warrior Games in San Antonio, Texas, from June 8 – 21, a testament to her resilience, consistency, and commitment to serving others.
While earning her place on Team Army, Mitchell was also a steady presence during the 2026 Army Trials at Fort Bliss, not only as a competitor but as a leader who chose to pour into those around her. Her actions reflected a deeper purpose rooted in the Warrior Ethos and the Army’s enduring commitment to never leave a Soldier behind.
This dedication is made even more profound by her own journey. Mitchell sustained serious injuries during a helicopter incident while deployed between Iraq and Syria in 2024. Her injuries resulted in her being medically evacuated to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. She is now under care at the Soldier Recovery Unit at Fort Bliss and the Intrepid Spirit Center at William Beaumont at William Beaumont Army Medical Center.
“I pride myself on being a fair and empathetic leader,” she said. “As a leader, you’re trusted with molding and guiding America’s daughters and sons and as I navigate recovery and life with a spinal cord injury, I’m reminding myself to extend that same compassion and grace inward.”
Following her multiple wins at the 2025 Warrior Games, Mitchell returned to Army Trials this year with a renewed sense of purpose. Having already proven herself as a top competitor, she made a conscious decision to shift her focus toward serving others.
“It meant the world to be back at Army Trials,” she said. “The energy was electric and contagious. Yes, it’s a competition, but it’s also a celebration of our healing.”
Instead of focusing solely on her own performance, Mitchell, who’s been in the Army 13 years, embraced the opportunity to support fellow Soldiers, especially those experiencing Army Trials for the first time.
“My goal this year was to get to know everyone and be the best host I could be,” she explained. “I never want to be anything but a bright spot in someone’s day. If that means I’m a motivator, I’ll take it.”
Her presence reflected the Warrior Ethos in action, driven by a simple, profound motivation.
“I find my motivation in being alive,” she said. “Every day I get to spend with my family is a gift, and I try to find the good in everything I do.”
That mindset carried directly into how she uplifted others. She saw the principle of "no Soldier left behind" embodied in the spirit of the competition itself.
“Army Trials is a great example of ‘no Soldier left behind,’” Mitchell said. “I remember being in the pool and other competitors who had already finished stayed to encourage me to keep going. Seeing everyone rally around one another, regardless of place, is powerful.”
Mitchell also encouraged her fellow competitors to remain focused on their individual journeys. “It’s easy to compare yourself to the person next to you,” she advised. “But we have to run our own race and focus on what you can do.”
Through her recovery with the Army Recovery Care Program and the SRU, Mitchell has maintained a mission-first mindset.
“As Soldiers, we’re used to having a mission,” she said. “We adapt and execute, a mindset that’s kept me focused and motivated to come back and represent the Army during Warrior Games.”
Now selected once again for Team Army, Mitchell carries forward more than her personal journey. Her passion is evident in her continued service to her comrades and her commitment to representing the Army with strength, humility, and purpose.
“I hope people understand that we’re capable competitors who can do anything we put our minds to,” she said. “It takes resilience and grit to heal and compete at this level.”
For Mitchell, competing is only part of the mission. Leading, encouraging and showing up for others remains at the center of who she is as a Soldier.
“At the end of the day, we’re all one family who answered the call,” she said.
