For Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Powell, his purpose didn't end after his transition from active duty in the Marine Corps to the U.S. Army. Powell transitioned into a civilian life focusing on building his family but recalls feeling a deeper pull, one rooted in service, purpose and people. This led him to continue his service and pursue a higher calling.
Powell currently serves with the Joint Task Force–National Capital Region Command Chaplain Section as the senior religious affairs noncommissioned officer. As a Religious Affairs Specialist assigned to the 59th Aviation Troop Command, he supports service members at critical moments, providing care, guidance, and ensuring they never feel alone.
“I discovered a calling in helping and supporting others,” Powell shared. “Joining the Army allowed me to continue serving while providing stability for my family.”
For Powell, service is deeply personal and extends far beyond the uniform. He recalls wanting to be a part of something greater than himself. The pillars of his service rest in what he believes to be his life’s purpose. “Placing others before yourself, sacrifice, commitment, and contributing to something larger than any one individual, lastly, “Service is about impact,” Powell says. “We are placed in people’s lives at critical moments to support, guide, and remind them they are not alone.”
Powell serves as a dual-status Title 32 federal technician, providing full-time religious affairs support and continuing his mission of care, in and out of uniform. Powell finds fulfillment in being a constant source of support. Whether standing beside service members in their highest achievements or their most difficult challenges. “I serve to live out my purpose, support others, and set an example my family can be proud of, especially my kids.”says Powell.
Powell’s role is vital to service members supporting the National Capital Region mission. He remains committed to the people they serve. Through dedication and purpose, he continues to lead with compassion and strength.
