SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas — Sheppard Air Force Base hosted its inaugural Military-Connected Senior Recognition Ceremony on March 29, 2026, honoring high school seniors from military families for their academic achievements and the resilience they have demonstrated throughout their educational journeys.
The ceremony brought together members of the Sheppard AFB community to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating students and acknowledge the unique challenges faced by youth growing up in military households.
The event began with a grand entrance, as students walked on a red carpet lined with cheering supporters. The program also included several speakers, among them student Robin Hendrickx, who spoke about the significance of the symbols associated with the Month of the Military Child and how they represent the shared experiences and strength of young people in military families.
“Moreover, in April, the Month of the Military Child, purple takes on added significance; it becomes a beacon,” Hendrickx said. “‘Purple Up!’ encourages us to wear and display the color purple as a visible symbol of our unwavering commitment to military‑connected children and youth.”
Hendrickx went on to explain the significance of the dandelion as a symbol for these students.
“The dandelion is a powerful symbol for military-connected students, resilient, adaptable, and able to thrive wherever the wind carries them,” Hedrickx said. “Like dandelion seeds, we students often take root in new places, growing stronger with each move and experience.”
Later in the ceremony, each senior was recognized individually, with U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Santiago Camacho, 82nd Force Support Squadron commander, presenting them certificates of achievement. Camacho then concluded the event with closing remarks, acknowledging the dedication shown by the students and thanking families and community partners for their continued support.
Following the event, Sheppard AFB School Liaison Ms. Susan Raymond reflected on the importance of creating a dedicated celebration for these seniors and the unique experiences that shape their educational paths.
“The Military-Connected Senior Recognition Ceremony gave us a chance, as a community, to give a huge shout-out for their sacrifices and an opportunity to celebrate how they have tackled many moves and parent deployments with such amazing spirit,” Raymond said. “Our hope is that this special day helped them to feel seen, valued, and totally ready to shine after graduation.”
As the first event of its kind at Sheppard AFB, the ceremony established a new tradition dedicated to honoring the accomplishments of students from military families and celebrating the strength, adaptability, and perseverance they demonstrate throughout their academic paths.
