NOKESVILLE, Va. – U.S. Marines, service members, and members of the local community gathered at Merrimac Farm in Nokesville, Virginia, March 29, 2026, to celebrate the annual Bluebell Festival hosted by the Prince William Conservation Alliance.

The festival takes place at the Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area (WMA) during the peak blooming period of the Virginia bluebell, a native perennial known for its blue, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in early spring. The event highlights the importance of environmental conservation and helps educate the local community about native wildlife in Prince William County.

The festival also highlights an ongoing partnership between Marine Corps Base Quantico, the Prince William Conservation Alliance and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. Through these collaborative conservation efforts, Merrimac Farm has remained a protected natural habitat since 2008.

“The partnership strengthens the bonds between community and the installation,” said Ana Jozsa, the Marine Corps Base Quantico Community Relations Officer. “The festival gives quantico a chance to interact with the community and showcase our natural resource programs.”

Visitors are encouraged to walk the Bluebell Trail, a two-mile path along Cedar Run that offers opportunities to observe local wildlife and experience the seasonal bloom of Virginia bluebells that blanket the floodplain. The event also featured local vendors, educational exhibits and guided tours designed to inform visitors about conservation initiatives and volunteer opportunities throughout Prince William County.

“The bluebells at Merrimac are the largest concentration in Prince William County. That is what makes the festival unique,” said Ana.

Merrimac Farm WMA is a 301-acre conservation site in Prince William County. Located along Cedar Run, the area contains diverse habitats including forests, wetlands and floodplain ecosystems that support a wide variety of wildlife and native plant species, including the Virginia bluebell.

“Merrimac Farm WMA was protected in large part because of the Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) program,” said Ashley Studholme, the executive director of the Prince William Conservation Alliance. “The Bluebell Festival is possible because of our collaborative effort. Every year, we celebrate that partnership with the emergence of the Virginia Bluebells.”

The festival provides an opportunity for Marines and base personnel to engage directly with the local community while supporting environmental stewardship efforts in the region and encouraging visitors to explore the natural beauty of Prince William County.
