Team Moody kicks off sexual assault awareness and prevention month

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga.— Today marks the kickoff of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM), a time dedicated to bringing focus to an issue that often goes unseen but has a significant impact on the health, resilience, and readiness across the force here at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, April 1, 2026.

Strengthening awareness, prioritizing prevention, and ensuring consistent support are essential to safeguarding Airmen, building resilience, and reinforcing a culture where no one faces challenges alone. Creating that culture is not the responsibility of one office or program alone. It requires commitment from every member of the team.

“SAAPM is a critical time to amplify our year-round efforts to eliminate sexual assault from our ranks,” said Luzmeilyn Camper, 23d Wing sexual assault response coordinator. “It is a dedicated month to raise awareness, educate our community on prevention strategies, and stand in solidarity with survivors. This year’s theme, ‘Step Forward. Prevent. Report. Advocate.,’ is a powerful call to action for every member of our community to take an active role in creating a culture of safety and respect. SAAPM provides an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to fostering an environment where every Airman and Guardian feels safe, respected, and empowered.”

Throughout the month, Team Moody will host a variety of events focused on education, engagement and empowerment. These efforts are designed to equip Airmen and support personnel with the knowledge and tools needed to recognize warning signs, intervene when necessary, and contribute to a safer environment for all.

“During April, my top priorities are the base’s unified stance against sexual assault by sprinkling across the installation with the color teal, the official color of sexual assault awareness,” Camper said. “The goal is to create a powerful, visible symbol of support for survivors and a commitment to prevention.”

“Everyone at Moody has influence,” Heather Potter, 23d Wing sexual assault response victim advocate. “Prevention begins with everyday actions: speaking up, modeling respect, checking in on peers, and refusing to ignore harmful behavior. Support can be as simple as listening, believing someone, and connecting them with resources.”

Resources remain available year-round for those seeking support. Airmen can reach out to the SAPR office, their chain of command, or utilize confidential reporting options to receive assistance. Whether someone chooses restricted or unrestricted reporting, trained professionals are available to provide care, advocacy, and guidance every step of the way.

“We have a comprehensive network of resources available to all Airmen, and we are committed to ensuring they are both accessible and confidential to include restricted and unrestricted reporting options and referrals to medical and mental health,” Camper said. “Disclosure is not a report, we are here to empower survivors to make an informed decision while safeguarding their story.”

To reinforce the importance of accessible and confidential care, SAPR leaders emphasized that support is available at every stage and tailored to the needs of everyone.

“Reaching out does not require making a report or taking any specific action,” Potter said, “It simply means you do not have to carry the weight alone. You set the pace, and we walk with you.”

That same commitment to empowerment extends beyond individual support and into the broader responsibility of shaping a culture rooted in accountability and respect.

Preventing sexual assault requires vigilance, accountability, and a willingness to act. Every member of the Moody community plays a role in looking out for one another, intervening when something doesn’t seem right, and fostering an environment where respect is the standard and misconduct is not tolerated.

“A culture free from sexual assault is one that strengthens unit cohesion, enhances trust in leadership, and ultimately improves our mission readiness,” Camper said. “When Airmen and Guardians know that their well-being is a priority and that they can rely on their peers and leaders for support, it creates a more resilient and effective force.”

As SAAPM continues, Moody will also highlight the voices and efforts of SAPR personnel and advocates who work year-round to support survivors and strengthen prevention initiatives. Their dedication underscores a simple truth that building a culture of trust and respect starts with each of us.

“The most important message I want every Airman and Guardian to take away is that we all have a role to play in preventing sexual assault,” Camper emphasized. “This is not just a SAPR program; it is a leadership responsibility and a personal commitment for every one of us. ‘Step Forward. Prevent. Report. Advocate.’ is our mantra. Be an active bystander, intervene when you see inappropriate behavior, and create an environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. And to any survivors, please know that you are not alone. We are here to support you with confidential and comprehensive care, and we will stand by you every step of the way.”

“Being part of SAPR Awareness Month at Moody is a reminder of why this work matters,” Potter added. “It is a chance to honor survivors, strengthen our community, and reaffirm our commitment to prevention.”
