Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Europe, Africa, Central (EURAFCENT) Expeditionary Directorate transferred a new Close Quarters Battle Complex to the Kenyan Navy (KNAV) Marine Commandos during a ribbon cutting ceremony March 25 at the Kenyan Navy base in Mtongwe County.
The new facility provides a modern, specialized training environment designed to enhance the operational readiness of KNAV Marine Commandos, supporting advanced training in close-quarters combat, marksmanship, tactical movement, and integrated maritime operations.
The project was a cooperative effort funded by the United States through the Section 333 Building Partner Capacity program with U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa as the Office of Primary Responsibility.
“The NAVFAC EURAFCENT team is honored to have delivered this mission-critical expeditionary asset, which is purpose-built to maximize the lethality and combat readiness of our Kenyan Marine partners,” said Alex Menez, deputy director, NAVFAC EURAFCENT’s Expeditionary Directorate and the project’s senior project manager. “From planning to execution, our focus was on providing a high-standard, realistic training environment that enables the warfighter to dominate in maritime and coastal interdiction.”
The $750,000 design-build contract was managed by NAVFAC EURAFCENT and was awarded to Swabian Concept Limited of Kampala, Uganda.
The facility’s training environment features a 100-meter small arms range, a live-fire shoot house for realistic combat scenarios and a dry-run shoot house for preliminary rehearsals.
“Seeing this complex ready for use is a proud moment for us as we provide the infrastructure to counter regional instability and strengthen our collective deterrent posture in the region,” said Menez.
The Section 333 program is a key component of Department of War security cooperation. It provides training and equipment to foreign national security forces to build their capacity in critical areas such as counter-terrorism, maritime security, and counter-narcotics.
