FORT SHAFTER FLATS, Hawaii — The Chief of the Army Reserve, Lt. Gen. Robert Harter, visited the 9th Mission Support Command headquarters at Fort Shafter Flats on March 21, engaging with leaders and Soldiers to assess readiness, sustainment operations, and ongoing initiatives across the Pacific theater.
During the visit, Harter received operational and strategic updates from key staff principals, beginning with a briefing from Col. Jason Kim, the 9th MSC G-3 (Operations). Kim provided an overview of current training readiness, operational tempo, and the command’s role in supporting Army Reserve forces across the Indo-Pacific region. The briefing emphasized the unique challenges of operating across dispersed geographic locations and highlighted efforts to maintain responsiveness and interoperability with active-duty and joint partners.
Harter also received a strategic outlook from Dr. Jeffrey Mullins, Deputy G-5, U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC), who discussed theater security cooperation, future posture considerations, and the Army Reserve’s integration into broader Pacific strategies. The discussion underscored the importance of aligning reserve capabilities with evolving regional demands and ensuring that Reserve forces remain a critical component of the Army’s forward presence.
As part of the visit, Harter conducted an office call with Brig. Gen. Katherine Trombley, commanding general of the 9th MSC. Their discussion focused on command priorities, leader development, and ongoing efforts to enhance Soldier readiness and resilience. Trombley highlighted the command’s commitment to supporting Soldiers and families across the Pacific, noting the importance of adaptability and strong leadership in a geographically dispersed command.
The visit included engagement with leaders and Soldiers whose work supports operations across vast distances, reinforcing the 9th MSC’s role in ensuring that the Army Reserve remains ready, capable, and relevant in the Indo-Pacific.
The visit concluded with a tour of the Area Maintenance Support Activity (AMSA) shop, led by Lt. Col. Ian Meyers, Chief of Sustainment (G-4). Meyers provided an overview of maintenance operations, equipment readiness, and sustainment challenges unique to island-based and remote environments. Harter observed ongoing maintenance activities and engaged with personnel, gaining firsthand insight into the critical sustainment functions that enable mission success.
The AMSA shop demonstrated the command’s ability to maintain high equipment readiness rates despite logistical constraints, reinforcing the importance of sustainment excellence in supporting operational readiness.
Harter’s visit to the 9th MSC highlights the Army Reserve’s continued focus on readiness, modernization, and integration within the Indo-Pacific theater. His engagement with leaders and Soldiers underscores the commitment to ensuring that Reserve forces remain a capable and essential element of the Total Army.
