CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea— For Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) Stavros Tsougkrianis of the Hellenic Army, the deployment to the Republic of Korea for Exercise Freedom Shield 26 (FS26) is more than a mission, it is an act of remembrance that honors a deep family connection to the Korean War.

LTCOL Tsougkrianis served as a United Nations Command (UNC) augmentee, part of a multinational force gathered to enhance readiness and reaffirm the international community's commitment to the Korean War Armistice. His presence carries personal significance, as his father's cousin, Aligiannis Christos, was one of the thousands of Greek soldiers who fought for freedom on this very peninsula more than 70 years ago.

"To serve where a member of my own family fought is a deeply humbling experience," LTCOL Tsougkrianis reflected.

"It reinforces the importance of the UNC's mission and the enduring partnership between Greece and the Republic of Korea. We are here to continue the legacy of ensuring peace."

The Greek Expeditionary Force was renowned for its tenacity and bravery during the Korean War, and that legacy is a point of pride for both nations.

As part of the UNC contingent, LTCOL Tsougkrianis visited the Joint Security Area (JSA) and the War Memorial of Korea, gaining a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by his predecessor and his countrymen.

His participation in FS26 is a powerful symbol of a promise kept across generations, a testament to Greece's unwavering commitment to stand with its allies in the pursuit of regional stability.
