Chapel renovates kitchen to support warfighters, families

The 375th Air Mobility Wing Chapel team just completed a major kitchen renovation funded through the wing’s investment in spiritual readiness infrastructure.

The facility serves more than 22,000 patrons annually across the installation that includes 36 mission partners supporting Scott AFB’s 24/7 global reach mission. Patrons heavily use the chapel kitchen and annex area for personal and professional events, and the updated kitchen will better serve their needs.

“The renovated kitchen represents more than an upgraded facility,” said Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Timothy Warf. “It embodies the Chaplain Corps’ mission to inspire the spirit of the warfighter through religious accommodation, spiritual fitness and leadership advice. Whether feeding families during crises, hosting fellowship events for seven faith groups or preparing meals for volunteers, the space directly supports the spiritual fitness of Airmen and their families.”

The ribbon-cutting caps an extraordinary year for the 19-member Total Force chapel team. They launched the first Protestant worship service at Scott AFB in five years, generated 3,800 engagements and 600 counseling sessions, oversaw 580 religious services for 13,000 patrons and inspired 16,000 volunteer hours.

The team also rallied 26 local congregations through memorandums of understanding to surge chapel support for future rapid, large-scale deployments, crisis events and combat operations. They also developed an innovative combat trauma pipeline training program with a local hospital and the 375th Medical Group, preparing religious support teams for realistic, large-scale combat crises and trauma-intervention operations.

Warf explained how the Chaplain Corps plays a unique and vital role in fortifying the warfighter spirit across Scott AFB.

“As the primary guardians of spiritual fitness, one of four domains of Comprehensive Airman Fitness, religious support teams ensure warfighters are spiritually fit and ready to thrive across the spectrum of military operations before, during and after their service. Through 100 percent confidential counseling, crisis intervention and spiritual care, chaplains and religious affairs Airmen provide a safe space for Airmen and families to find meaning, build resilience and strengthen their warrior ethos. As the Chaplain Corps vision states: Every warfighter is spiritually fit and ready.”
