KADENA AIR BASE, Japan – U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron and U.S. Marines assigned to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion established a joint tactical fuel system using both Air Force and Marine Corps contingency equipment during a USAF-led exercise Beverly Midnight 26 at Kadena Air Base, Japan, March 10, 2026.
The exercise created opportunities to synchronize and integrate forces across Japan through joint, coalition and bilateral training from simulated forward operating bases.
During the exercise scenario, Airmen and Marines constructed an above-ground fuel storage system on Kadena’s airfield capable of sustaining aircraft fuel and flight operations while integrating equipment from both services.
“This is the first time we are utilizing our gear along with the 18th LRS’ equipment,” said U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Miluska Pazzavala, a bulk fuel specialist assigned to Bulk Fuel Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion. “Syncing operations keeps the footprint for fuel operations smaller while maintaining support for several missions, including crisis response or humanitarian efforts, and reducing overall turnaround time.”
Exercises like Beverly Midnight 26 provide units the opportunity to test response capabilities in unique environments while encouraging innovative solutions through creative problem solving.
“Together we have created a mobile stand that allows us to refuel aircraft and vehicles faster compared to standard operations,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Nicholas Rockwell, 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of fuel support. “We can load onto a military cargo aircraft and establish operations within hours, anywhere.”
Exercise Beverly Midnight 26 enhances interoperability between U.S. forces by encouraging the exchange of information between services and refining shared tactics, techniques and procedures to better integrate defense capabilities in support of regional security and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
