KADENA AIR BASE, Japan – U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 18th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron conducted water sample testing during base wide operational readiness exercise Beverly Midnight 26, at Kadena Air Base, Japan, Mar. 9, 2026.
During BM26, Airmen test their base defense capabilities by running through multiple disaster scenarios. Realistic combat training is essential to the success of air and space operations, and hands-on experience is an invaluable resource.
“We increase the frequency of tests as a form of heightened awareness,” said Senior Airman Mary Clift, 18th OMRS bioenvironmental engineering technician. “It’s important that we know as soon as possible if a water source has been contaminated, we need to know which source and when.”
The 18th OMRS is responsible for safeguarding the water supply for the whole installation. During peacetime, they continuously check the water for any environmental hazards. In austere environments, they check to confirm that the supply is safe from any tampering.
“It would be incredibly difficult for our water supply to become contaminated,” said Tech. Sgt. Alexander Delf, 18th OMRS Noncommissioned officer in charge, bioenvironmental engineering flight operations. “But even one drop isn’t acceptable. Our job is about maintaining the trust of Kadena, while also promoting security.”
Airmen practice interoperability during BM26, demonstrating U.S. and Allied airpower resilience and survivability in contested environments. Practicing increased security measures like water testing improves the 18th OMRS’s operational capabilities and ensures mission readiness.
