Eighth Air Force command team visits Minot Air Force Base
U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Ty Neuman, Eighth Air Force and Joint-Global Strike Operations Center commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Brandon Wolfgang, Eighth Air Force command chief and J-GSOC senior enlisted leader, met with Airmen from Minot Air Force Base, February 23-24.
This was their first visit to Minot AFB since Neuman took command in November 2025. During the visit, they met with Airmen of the 5th Bomb Wing and local area civic leaders to discuss the importance of readiness, modernization and standards at Minot AFB -- the only base in the Department of War that hosts two legs of the Nuclear Triad.
Neuman and Wolfgang are responsible for the Air Force’s bomber force and airborne nuclear command and control assets while overseeing all strategic deterrence operations within Air Force Global Strike Command.
One of their main priorities is modernization of the B-52H Stratofortress, a bomber platform flown by the aircrews of Minot AFB’s 5 BW. The U.S. Air Force recently awarded Boeing a contract that will see these aircraft upgraded with new engines that will improve their performance and change their designation to B-52J.
During a meeting with 5 BW’s aviation officers, Neuman underscored that their credibility as a fighting force is built upon maintaining a strong and ready nuclear force. He explained that key indicators like aircraft availability, aircrew proficiency, and the ability to generate combat power at scale are not just metrics -- they are the fundamental measure of that strength and the bomber force’s ability to deter adversaries.
“The nuclear triad is the bedrock of our national defense,” said Neuman. “Continued investment in the modernization of the B-52 ensures we have the cutting-edge needed to remain out in front of our adversaries.”
While on base, the leadership team recognized superior performers, discussed quality of life initiatives for Airmen and families, and toured the Dakota Inn Dining Facility and flight line.
They began their visit by joining the Airmen of the 5 BW for their morning physical training session.
“Understanding, complying, and enforcing standards is essential,” said Wolfgang. “The hard work the Warbird Airmen put in to improve their physical fitness really reflects their commitment to warrior readiness. What’s a better way to start our visit than getting our blood pumping with these tough Airmen?”
Throughout the visit, Neuman and Wolfgang received a first-hand look at the key roles the Airmen of Minot AFB play in the larger mission of strategic deterrence and how modernization in equipment and infrastructure will ensure Minot AFB continues to meet the needs of an ever-evolving global, strategic environment.
“The sign on the base’s gate reads, ‘only the best come North,’” said the commander. “And after meeting with the Airmen of the 5 BW and witnessing their focus and grit, chief and I can see that it’s true. Successful teams do hard things together, and the successes here demonstrate that Team Minot is a cut above.”
