SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay (WTGB 104) conducted ice breaking operations between the Sugar Island Ferry landings on the St. Marys River for approximately nine hours on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
As a result, at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Thursday night, the ferry notified Sector Northern Great Lakes that it had resumed its normal operating schedule.
The Biscayne Bay is scheduled to continue ice-breaking operations Friday and Saturday in the area, supporting the Coast Guard’s efforts of ensuring the safe and efficient flow of people and goods through the maritime transportation system.
Coast Guard Cutter Katmai Bay (WTGB 101) remains in port continuing to conduct repairs, and no other Coast Guard icebreakers are able to transit to the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan area until Monday.
