ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England-- The 48th Maintenance Group weapons standardization section hosted Royal Air Force and Royal Navy members assigned to RAF Marham, England for a weapons standardization briefing and load demonstration on Feb. 17.
The weapons standardization section is responsible for ensuring munitions are safely, reliably and efficiently loaded across the force. They uphold strict technical procedures while training, evaluating and certifying weapons load crews, ensuring consistency and proficiency is upheld to maintain combat readiness.
During the event, RAF and RN members witnessed a timed loading demonstration, conducted by a 48th MXG loading crew and overseen by F-35 loading standardization crew members. This gave participants an opportunity to learn both the physical loading procedures as well as the guidelines in place to ensure safety and efficiency throughout the process.
“The demonstration reinforced how closely aligned our procedures are with our USAF partners,” said Royal Air Force Chief Technician David, Lightning Training Flight chief instructor. “Despite differences in weapon types and terminology, our approach to weapons safety and quality assurance is remarkably similar.”
These demonstrations also allow service members to understand the fundamental similarities or differences between the aircraft each service utilizes: in this case the F-35A Lightning II aircraft, operated by the U.S. Air Force, and the F-35B Lightning II aircraft, utilized by the RAF and RN.
“Cross-service demonstrations like this are essential for building confidence and cohesion before we find ourselves in deployed or exercise environments,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Fancisca Holloway-Smith, 48th MXG F-35 loading standardization crew member. “Training together allows us to identify friction points early, streamline communication and ensure that when it matters most, we can operate seamlessly as a joint force.”
The integration between the RAF, RN and USAF weapons teams is imperative to enhancing interoperability, allowing each service to educate and learn from one another to improve processes and fight cohesively.
“Working with our U.S. counterparts is always a positive experience. There’s a strong sense of shared purpose, especially when we’re handling live capability,” said Royal Navy Petty Officer Craig, Lightning Training Flight weapons instructor. “Integration like this proves we can operate seamlessly when it counts.”
