LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Command Sgt. Maj. Drew Pumarejo, the command sergeant major of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Knox, Ky., threw out the first pitch at the Louisville Bats final regular season game at Louisville Slugger Stadium in Louisville, Ky., Sept. 6, 2010.
This event marked the first opportunity for the 3/1 IBCT, who have just returned from a month-long training exercise at Fort Irwin, Calif., to partner with the local AAA baseball heroes.
When asked about his minor league debut, Pumarejo said “the stadium was great, the field was great, and it was fun to throw the first pitch in front a stadium full of baseball fans, some of them my own Duke Brigade soldiers.” He went on to say that he looks forward to working with the Bats in future events.
John, and Matt McCollum, Jr., aged seven and nine respectively, two sons of Lt. Col. Matt McCollum, the 3/1 IBCT executive officer, also got a taste for minor league baseball when they got the opportunity to help the groundskeepers clean the field and race Buddy Bat, the Bats’ mascot, around the bases between innings.
The Bats won the Labor Day game against the Indianapolis Indians 6 – 3, clinching their division title and a playoff berth. Their post-season begins Wednesday in a home game against the Durham, N.C., Bulls.
