SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After more than two decades, the En Garde, a historic publication of the 174th Attack Wing, New York Air National Guard, has returned.
Originally inspired by a precursor publication called The Minuteman, a newsletter by the 138th Fighter Squadron, the first issue of the En Garde was officially released in 1956 by the 174th Fighter Wing. The En Garde served for almost 50 years as a magazine dedicated to sharing stories, achievements and messages from leadership across the wing. The publication concluded in 2004 due to budgetary constraints. In 2026, the magazine was revived as a digital-first product produced by the 174th Attack Wing Public Affairs Office.
The renewed En Garde is designed to highlight meaningful and significant stories about the Airmen of the 174th Attack Wing, the mission, and the people that make it possible.
“We are bringing it back in digital form,” said Col. Brett Batick, 174th Attack Wing Commander. “My intent for this publication is not to take the place of newsletters that your Squadrons or Groups may have. This is to be the Wing magazine where we can tell the stories of the Airmen in this Wing.”
The magazine will be published quarterly and sent via email on weekends without drill, ensuring that members can stay informed and involved. It will also be available on the 174th Attack Wing website and DVIDS for easy access.
Col. Batick emphasized the importance of member contributions, saying, “I offer anyone in this Wing an opportunity to write a story that we can publish here. We do unbelievable things in this Wing, and I hope that you will find this to be a magazine where we can showcase some of those things and one that we are all proud to show to our families and friends.”
This revival highlights the members and their contributions while maintaining a commitment to preserving the wing’s history, all while doing it through modern communications. Members are encouraged to submit stories and suggestions to the Public Affairs Office as the En Garde continues to evolve.
