By Douglas Holl, Defense Health Agency-Public Health Public Affairs Defense Health Agency-Public Health recently launched a new comprehensive online training course designed to equip Department of War public health, prevention, force health protection, and health care professionals with essential health promotion competencies tailored specifically for military communities.

The "Essentials of Health Promotion" course, developed by members of the Health Promotion and Wellness Directorate within DHA-Public Health, is now available on-demand through the Joint Knowledge Online Virtual Classroom Learning Management System (CAC-enabled).

The course outlines Health Promotion program planning and delivery standards across the DOW, said Army Lt. Col. Julianna Jayne, HPW director. This included updating and adapting courses originally developed for service-level implementation for DOW-wide use.

"Our team recognized that public health professionals serving military populations needed training that goes beyond traditional civilian health promotion approaches,” said Jayne. "This course addresses the unique challenges and opportunities within military communities."

Comprehensive curriculum addresses military-specific needs The self-paced course is expected to take about three and a half hours total to complete and consists of six modules covering critical areas of health promotion practice, from community health assessment to communication strategies. The curriculum is designed to provide learners with both theoretical foundations and practical skills applicable to military environments.

"This isn't just generic health promotion training adapted for military use — we built this from the ground up with military populations and environments in mind," said Jayne. The course modules include:

    • Community Health Assessment and Improvement Planning
    • Program Planning I: Goals and SMART Objectives
    • Program Planning II: Logic Models as a Tool in Public Health Planning and Evaluation
    • Data and Evaluation I: Overview of Program Evaluation
    • Data and Evaluation II: Data Collection
    • Communication Campaigns for Health Promotion and Wellness

Each course module includes case studies, knowledge checks, and self-reflection activities designed to help engage learners with the content, said Jayne.

“Some modules also include supplemental learning materials that are available for download,” said Jayne. “These include templates, examples, and other resources to help learners bring each module’s content into everyday practice.”

Professional development with continuing education credits The course serves dual purposes as both skills development and professional advancement opportunity. Through the https://www.dhaj7-cepo.com/ accreditation, course completion provides three continuing education credits for physicians, nurses, social workers, athletic trainers, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, and health care executives. Other attendees receive a certificate of attendance.

"We're providing our workforce with evidence-based competencies that can directly translate to improved health and readiness outcomes for service members and their families," said Jayne. "Offering continuing education credits ensures our professionals can maintain their certifications while gaining military-relevant skills."

Flexible access for global workforce The online, on-demand format addresses the unique scheduling and geographic challenges facing military health care and public health professionals.

"The self-paced, online format ensures our professionals can access this training whether they're stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, or deployed overseas," said Jayne. "Flexibility is essential for our global workforce." Jayne says the course is intended for any personnel, leaders, or support entities focused on improving force and family health, readiness, and resilience.

“We want to create Health Promotion champions, collaborators, and executors,” said Jayne. “We’re encouraging anyone who wants or needs to develop health promotion competencies to complete the course.”

6 core learning objectives Upon completion, learners will be able to:

    1. Comprehend core concepts and frameworks within public health promotion and their application to military health, resilience, and readiness
    2. Assess the health and wellness needs and priorities of military communities
    3. Utilize various data collection strategies for determining health promotion needs in target populations
    4. Plan comprehensive health promotion programs tailored to military populations, considering cultural, social, and environmental factors
    5. Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of health promotion initiatives using appropriate methods and metrics
    6. Develop, test, and assess health promotion communication strategies for diverse military audiences

After completing the course modules, training participants will complete a post-test to assess mastery of the course materials. In addition to the post-test, the course will be formally evaluated by a separate team at DHA Public Health.

“The goal of the overall course evaluation is to identify learners’ perceptions of and experiences with the training, intention to use training material, and opportunities for improvement,” said Stephanie Meier, part of HPW’s Community Health Assessment and Action team. “As this is an inaugural training, findings and recommendations from this evaluation will allow for continuous improvement and optimization of the training for the field.” Learners who agree to participate in the evaluation will complete the training (all modules and post-test) and engage in small virtual focus group discussions to provide feedback, which will be compiled and synthesized to share key insights, said Meier.

Course access and support DOW professionals can access the course through the JKO Learning Management System VCLASS platform. Detailed instructions and a tip sheet with screenshots are available on the DHA Public Health Community Health Promotion webpage.

Course administrators provide ongoing support and can be contacted at mailto:dha.apg.Pub-Health-A.mbx.essentials-of-health-promotion@health.milfor questions or technical assistance.

“The course represents DHA-Public Health's commitment to advancing professional development within the military health community while ensuring health promotion efforts are evidence-based and tailored to the unique needs of service members and their families,” said Jayne.
