    1st Mission Support Command

Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico — 2nd Lt. Emanuel Heredia, a military intelligence officer assigned to the 393rd Battalion, 1st Mission Support Command, currently serves as the officer in charge of the S-2 Section.

Heredia’s responsibilities include analyzing enemy threats, terrain, weather, and operational environments, as well as preparing intelligence briefings that support commanders’ decision-making throughout planning and execution phases of missions.

“Our main focus is mission analysis," said Heredia. "I do a lot of the briefing and planning. Military Intelligence Soldiers are essential because they have to analyze the red for threats and if our units get deployed we have to research the area and see where we are going.”

The 393rd Battalion oversees 11 companies, supports over 900 Soldiers across the formation. Heredia’s work impacts a wide operational footprint, requiring coordination across multiple units and constant collaboration with noncommissioned officers (NCOs).

Recently, Herredia had the opportunity to be in the 1 MSC's operations section, where he gained insight into senior-level planning processes and how the missions are distributed across lower levels.

“On a personal level, I am very humble," said Heredia. " I am always reaching out to downtrace noncommissioned officers that know more than me or have more experience.”

A native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Heredia commissioned as an officer on May 5, 2023, after graduating from the University of Tampa, where he earned a double major in entrepreneurship and international business. He completed the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program while attending the university on a full scholarship before joining the U.S. Army Reserve.

Outside of uniform, Heredia is preparing for the Law School Admission Test and plans to pursue law school in Puerto Rico, with interests in attending Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico. His long-term goal is to become a malpractice attorney.

Heredia said his experience in military intelligence has exposed him to potential work with federal agencies and joint organizations, reinforcing the value of intelligence training at the battalion level.
