GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind. – The 434th Aerospace Medicine Squadron came to the aid of our fellow service members, preventing mission-failure, when they assisted with required medical examinations for a local Marine unit.
Thirteen Marines assigned to the 4th Marine Logistics Group, Engineer Services Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 25, received vision testing and were seen by a medical provider to determine their ability to operate a Humvee.
“We were contacted by the Marines out of South Bend to conduct short notice medical examinations for their Tactical Engineer Operator’s License,” said Tech. Sgt. Nicholas Golden, 434th AMDS flight medicine noncommissioned officer in charge. “At the time they were near mission-failure as only one member of their unit was current and able to operate the vehicles.”
Golden said the Marines typically receive their examination out of Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois; however, Grissom is a shorter drive for them and the 434th AMDS were able to meet their mission requirements sooner.
The 434th AMDS has also supported the Army Reserve Recruiting units stationed in South Bend and Mishawaka, Indiana.
Golden’s willingness to support military members outside of Grissom stems from his own past experiences as a guardsman and reservist, he said.
At one point in his career, he described himself as living far from the base and said there were times he reached out to closer units and found they didn’t have the resources to help military members not assigned to them.
“When I got here six years ago, I made it my mission that if anyone asked, regardless of service, for something we are able to do, that I would,” said Golden. “I feel like it reflects great on Grissom, and also on the Air Force.”
