An unusually cool Hawaii day, with dark clouds threatening in the distance, didn’t stop the droves of shipyard workers from putting down their tools and checking out the annual Knowledge Share Fair put on by Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
Held every January, the event is a way for workers to get a fun, interactive glimpse of some of the functions performed by their fellow shipyard workers.
"I think it's important for people to share what they do," said Jennifer Braden, division head for 100.TO.1 Strategic Transformation Division, "we get very siloed in our own space and our own work. So, it's great to understand how we impact each other and how we all contribute to the ultimate mission."
The event boasted 20 booths that spanned all the shipyard codes, three food-truck vendors, and even a booth from Navy Medical. Booths offered information about their code's function, interactive games, prizes, and plenty of snacks, with even one shop, 56 AC & R, giving out soft-serve ice cream. Eventgoers were treated to a scavenger hunt, virtual reality painting, mini-bowling, and more. The games available were not only meant to be fun but also often mirrored the real-world skill set used by that code.
One of the most talked-about booths demonstrated this connection perfectly. Technicians from Code 930, who specialize in precision inspections inside the cramped and complex parts of a ship, created a game to mimic their work
"Code 930 had this box. You had to use this tiny mirror to trace a star, but it almost changes your perception of what direction you're going," said Elle Almazan, a training specialist with Code 1180 Command University. "I can't even fathom how people are able to do some of the techniques they use."
The spirit of the event remained light-hearted and fun, with a steady flow of eventgoers throughout the four-hour run. Many were reveling in the opportunity to take a break from the daily grind and enjoy the Ohana atmosphere with their coworkers.
"Through this fair, we clearly saw collaboration," said Sally Wang, a financial management analyst for Code 610. "Enthusiasm, teamwork, strong communication, and the hardworking spirit of everyone involved, which made the learning experience both enjoyable and meaningful."
Despite the threatening weather, Mother Nature held out long enough for another successful Knowledge Share Fair. Nothing but smiles could be seen during the bustling event, a clear sign of its positive impact on the yard.
"It's really good for folks like me who sit in an office to meet the folks who actually physically fix the ships and do really hard work," said Tracy Page, a program manager for Code 1140 admin. "It's a win-win for both the people in the booth as well as for the folks who are coming here to gain some knowledge."
