INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana National Guardsmen are scheduled to conclude their severe winter weather response mission, Jan. 27, 2026, following several days of support to civil authorities during a winter weather event impacting central and southern Indiana.

Nearly 300 Indiana National Guard soldiers and airmen were activated to assist their fellow Hoosiers, working alongside the Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana Department of Homeland Security to support public safety efforts throughout the event.

During the operation, the Indiana National Guard established 24 highway assistance teams across the state, with 12 teams positioned in central Indiana and 12 teams positioned in southern Indiana.

Teams operated out of armories and command and control locations, including a command and control team in Evansville. Soldiers and airmen provided coverage along U.S. 41 from Evansville to Vincennes, Interstate 64 from New Albany to Evansville, Interstate 65 from New Albany to Columbus and Interstate 69 from Evansville to Bloomington.

“I am extremely proud of our service members who continue to answer the call,” said Maj. Gen. Larry Muennich, adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard. “These Guardsmen are your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers and your family members who have volunteered to serve in times of need. We are always ready and always there.”

Over the course of the mission, Indiana National Guard personnel conducted 192 engagements with the motorists, assisted 87 vehicles, transported 16 stranded motorists and encountered 83 vehicles that declined assistance. No serious injuries were reported among Guard personnel.

The Indiana National Guard was activated by Gov. Mike Braun through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Indiana National Guard soldiers and airmen serve in a dual mission to nation and state, supporting overseas deployments and responding to crises in the homeland.
