CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — For many Soldiers stationed overseas, stepping outside the barracks and into a new culture can feel overwhelming. In 2025, the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program at U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys capped off a highly successful year by breaking down those barriers, bringing Soldiers together through hundreds of events designed to build connection, confidence and community.

The Army BOSS program’s mission is to enhance the quality of life, morale and readiness for single Soldiers by providing organized recreational activities, community service projects, and a platform for their voices to be heard by leadership, focusing on three pillars: recreation/leisure, community service and quality of life.

“This year we enhanced our focus on the camaraderie that we as Soldiers share,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Jordan Owens, BOSS vice president of plans, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, USAG Humphreys. “Since COVID, more Soldiers have been expressing how difficult it is leaving their ‘comfort-zone’ and trying to find like-minded individuals to hang out with.”

To counter this trend, the program focused on increasing opportunities for Soldiers to connect through shared experiences, expanding both the number and variety of events offered throughout.

As part of that effort, the BOSS team hosted cross-garrison initiatives, expanded cultural and recreational trips and visited more than 15 units across the installation. Through more than 25 unit briefs, BOSS leaders engaged Soldiers directly, ensuring they were aware of available resources and reinforcing the message that they are not alone while serving overseas.

One of the program’s largest accomplishments in 2025 was the execution of the BOSS Rally, the first cross-garrison BOSS event held in more than eight years. Hosted at the Morning Calm Center on USAG Humphreys, the event brought together more than 200 Soldiers from across the peninsula for a day of games, social interaction and camaraderie. Participants enjoyed a catered buffet and had opportunities to win prizes, including a PlayStation 5.

The event helped in generating a massive sum – more than $150,000 in revenue for the year, making the rally one of the most successful BOSS events in recent memory.

“This year we significantly surpassed required quarterly benchmarks by executing over 380 events,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. JaTavian Lusane, BOSS president, HHC, USAG Humphreys. “These included 129 quality of life events, 99 community service events, 57 recreation and leisure events, and 24 life skills events.”

Another standout initiative was the launch of the Warrior Cup, a monthly competition designed to encourage unit pride and friendly competition. The Warrior Cup featured a rotating variety of events ranging from sports to holiday-themed challenges, giving Soldiers an opportunity to represent their units while building esprit de corps.

Cultural immersion remained a cornerstone of BOSS programming. By coordinating trips selected by Soldiers for Soldiers, the program helped participants explore Korea’s festivals, hiking trails, shopping districts and cultural landmarks in a familiar and supportive environment. Working closely with MWR Outdoor Recreation, BOSS minimized common barriers such as transportation challenges, language differences and unfamiliar public transit systems, making off-post experiences more accessible and less intimidating.

“One of the hardest parts of being a single Soldier in a foreign country is finding ways to integrate with the host nation community and finding ways to immerse myself in the rich culture,” said U.S. Army Spc. Daniel Jean-Charles, BOSS secretary, HHC, USAG Humphreys. “The cultural immersion trips that BOSS provides is the best and easiest way of getting over that hump for Soldiers who want to truly experience all that Korea has to offer.”

In addition to trips and special events, Soldiers can take advantage of ongoing on-post opportunities such as the Gary Sinise Foundation Appreciation Meal, held every first Tuesday of the month from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., which offers free pizza and bowling for service members and first responders.

The USAG Humphreys BOSS team consists of six Soldiers and one civilian advisor: - U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jatavian Lusane\, president - U.S. Army Sgt. Jordan Owens\, vice president of plans - U.S. Army Sgt. Kianna Scott\, vice president of operations - U.S. Army Spc. Daniel Jean-Charles\, secretary - Korean Augmentation to the United States Army Pfc. Youngkwan Kim\, KATUSA vice president - Lorenzo Ranches\, civilian advisor

Their efforts contributed to the program’s continued recognition, including four Best BOSS Program in the Pacific awards and a runner-up award for Best BOSS Program in the Army. Looking ahead, BOSS leadership aims to expand outreach efforts, collaborate more closely with other garrison BOSS programs and continue offering larger, more diverse events in the year to come.

“I’m incredibly proud of what the BOSS team accomplished in 2025,” said Lorenzo Ranches, civilian advisor to the USAG Humphreys BOSS program. “The dedication, creativity, and countless hours these Soldiers put in made a real difference across the garrison. Seeing how far the program has come makes me excited for what 2026 will bring.”

Soldiers interested in learning more about the BOSS program can visit the Downtown Recreation Center (Building 5724) across from Texas Roadhouse, or sign up for trips at the Warrior Zone (Building 6807), Outdoor Recreation Center (Building 110), or Zoeckler Gym (Building 1296).
