    DoW, Military-Civilian Transition Office

U.S. Navy Chief Ernesto Casado’s transition from military service to civilian life was not about leaving service behind but about continuing it in a new way.

Casado’s military career included overseas deployments supporting multinational peacekeeping missions, where he worked alongside international partners and developed leadership, adaptability, and teamwork skills that would later prove essential beyond the uniform.

As Casado prepared for retirement, he discovered the DoW SkillBridge program during a military transition seminar. The program offered a training opportunity to gain hands-on civilian work experience while still on active duty, helping him explore post-military career options before separation. With support from mentors, Casado connected with U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Veterans Employment Program Manager and was selected for a SkillBridge internship in the Office of Accountability.

During his internship, Casado shadowed experienced CBP professionals, supported team projects, conducted research, and participated in training sessions. The immersive experience allowed him to demonstrate his skills and work ethic over several months. Casado described SkillBridge as an extended opportunity to show an employer what he could bring to the organization—comparing it to a prolonged “elevator pitch” that provides real-world exposure and meaningful contribution. The experience ultimately led to his successful placement as a Management and Program Analyst with CBP.

Now thriving in his civilian role, Casado encourages other transitioning service members to take advantage of transition opportunities like SkillBridge. His guiding principle throughout his journey remains: Non desistas, non exieris—never give up, never surrender.

SkillBridge continues to serve as a valuable pathway for service members seeking to apply their military experience in civilian careers while preparing for life beyond service.
