MCGHEE TYSON AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Tenn. — Members of the 119th Cyberspace Operations Squadron gather with distinguished guests and former commanders Jan. 11, 2026, to commemorate the unit’s 75th anniversary.
The ceremony honored the squadron’s long history, celebrated the accomplishments of its Airmen and reflected on the evolution of a unit which continues to adapt to meet the demands of a changing global security environment. Past and present members stood side by side as leaders recognized the legacy built since the squadron’s inception.
"This is more than just an excuse to get together," said Lt. Col. Joseph Ogle, the 119th COS commander. "It is a chance to honor three quarters of a century of unwavering commitment, profound service and the remarkable individuals who have shaped our legacy to our nation and our state. Today, I hope we share laughter, rekindle the bonds of camaraderie and forge new connections that strengthen our incredible community."
Originally activated to provide aircraft warning and control, the unit spent its early years operating mobile tactical radar systems and watching the skies during the Cold War. As global threats shifted, so did the squadron's mission. In 1992 it became the 119th Air Control Squadron, and in 2002 was redesignated the 119th Command and Control Squadron to reflect its expanding role supporting space operations.
Recently, the 119th COS became a major component of the 228th Cyberspace Operations Group which activated in August 2024 under the 134th Air Refueling Wing. This new group brings together the 119th and the 241st Engineering Installation Squadron to strengthen the Tennessee National Guard's cyber and communications infrastructure mission.
"Today, we're not simply defending a physical space," Ogle said. "We are securing the technological foundation of virtually all Air Force weapons systems—a profoundly critical mission, especially in today's geopolitical environment."
As part of the celebration, the 75th anniversary ceremony honored current members, veterans and families whose service has shaped the squadron's history. The event also offered a chance to look forward, as the squadron continues to adapt to new threats and technologies in cyberspace.
"I am proud to be a part of this organization," said Lt. Col. Latashia Posey, the 119th COS Combat Operations Division chief. "I am excited to see what our future holds and honored to be able to help lead them in future accomplishments."
