On Sept. 15, elements of the Navy will present a master plan for the future of a 905 acre military installation located in the southeast Washington. Anacostia neighborhood at a meeting being held in the community for interested citizens and community leaders to learn how any future development may affect them.

The installation has been a Department of Defense property since 1917. It has been the home of naval, Army and Air Force organizations. Over the years, two separate but adjacent bases evolved into what are known today as Naval Support Facility Anacostia and Bolling Air Force Base.

In 2005, congressionally approved Base Realignment and Closure Commission legislation ordered the unification of both bases into a joint base, effective Oct. 1, 2010.

The unified installation, to be known as Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, will be 3.3 miles in length and is bounded by Interstate 295, South Capital Street and the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. It is located approximately one-half mile from the Ana¬costia Metrorail station on the northern portion of the base and approximately 1.5 miles from its main gate to the Congress Heights Metrorail station.

The public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the UPO Petey Greene Center, 2907 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave, SE in Washington.

Since the BRAC legislation was enacted, Air Force and Navy planners and leaders have steadfastly worked to ensure a smooth transition to JBAB. To support the transition, Naval Facilities Engineering Command-Washington (NAVFAC) has developed a Joint Base Installation Master Plan as a vision and guide for the future use of the installation over the next 10 years.

Recognizing that the image of Washington is frequently on display in the national and international spotlight, the master plan was devised with a goal of helping to preserve and enhance that image, not only for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors, but for the entire nation.

Respecting the concerns and honoring the existing positive relationships with the surrounding community, its people, organizations and leaders, the master plan takes into consideration the guidance of the District of Columbia’s local plans and those of the National Capital Plan¬ning Commission, which contain goals, objectives, and planning policies to guide growth and development in the District of Columbia and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Land use, urban design, transportation, parking, historic building preservation, open space and environmentally friendly management along the installation’s shoreline are addressed in the master plan.

“It is not a construction plan, but rather a vision for the future. A plan that will be reviewed periodically and revised to reflect the realities at the time and used as a guide when development or redevelopment occurs,” Naval District Washington Corporate Information Officer John Imparato said.
