CAMP HANSEN, Okinawa, Japan — U.S. Marines with 3d Intelligence Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group (MIG), conducted a Direct Support Team (DST) field exercise from Dec. 9-12, 2025, at Camp Hansen. The field exercise built upon lessons learned from a similar DST field exercise held in August 2025, which focused on simulating distributed intelligence functions to enhance III MEF’s command and control capabilities.
During the December field exercise, Marines established one intelligence operations center and two DSTs in simulated expeditionary environments, one DST focused on intelligence production and analysis and the other on dynamic targeting support. Marines operated under a battle rhythm that mirrored real-world operations, supporting III MEF’s intelligence needs through real-time production, analysis and targeting efforts.
"This exercise is a critical opportunity for our Marines to refine their ability to operate in a dynamic, expeditionary environment. By simulating real-world intelligence operations, we ensure that III MIG’s command and control capabilities remain agile and ready to support any mission, anywhere, anytime,” said Maj. Anthony Alexander, operations company commander with 3d Intelligence Battalion.
The DST field exercise is part of ongoing efforts to prepare Marines for real-time operational intelligence, providing them with hands-on experience in executing their roles while maintaining a common intelligence picture across multiple nodes. Through the dispersed and dynamic nature of this DST field exercise Marines strengthened their ability to respond effectively to robust operational requirements.
The field exercise emphasized adaptability and operational readiness, as Marines simulated support to III MEF’s evolving needs in a dynamic, conflict-like environment. Due to 3d Intelligence Battalion Marines’ continued dedication to improving their use of DSTs in support of increased command and control, they effectively contribute to strengthening III MEF’s intelligence capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.
