VICENZA, Italy— Community and relationship building framed Maj. Gen. Andrew C. Gainey’s recent engagements with Vicenza’s civic leadership.
The U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) commanding general met Prefect Filippo Romano to discuss shared priorities and continued partnership.
“Even with our different languages and traditions, what brings us together in Vicenza is a shared dedication to cooperation and friendship,” said Gainey.
Although the conversation touched on a range of issues, the meeting returned to a common theme: reinforcing the longstanding relationship that allows U.S. Soldiers and their families to live, work and contribute in the community.
The meeting unfolded just after the semiannual Mayors Summit, a forum where mayors, deputy mayors and council members from around Vicenza gather with U.S. military leaders to discuss upcoming initiatives and explore new ways to bring the Italian and American communities into closer conversation.
The Mayors Summit is not the only initiative designed to strengthen relations. The Community Alliance Partnership program, run by U.S. Army Garrison Italy, forms the foundation of ongoing engagement between U.S. and Italian communities in northern Italy. The program includes quarterly meetings between U.S. leadership and local officials, along with U.S. participation in community events throughout the region.
The engagement also aligns with a milestone year for SETAF-AF, which marks its 70th anniversary in 2025. Formed in 1955, the command has long been a fixture in Italy and a trusted leader in joint operations, serving as a ready headquarters for deployments across the African continent and beyond.
“Our ability to operate effectively in Italy begins with trust,” Gainey said. “We strive to build relationships through a range of initiatives, and the Vicenza community has been a generous host. Our Soldiers are proud to be part of this partnership.”
