BAER FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. – U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Douglas Dye retired after more than 40 years of dedicated service during a ceremony on Dec. 7, 2025, at the 122nd Fighter Wing (FW), Fort Wayne, Indiana.
“One of the things I’m grateful for to the 122nd Fighter Wing is that it’s given me many opportunities,” Dye said.
Dye enlisted in 1985 and saw numerous deployments and leadership changes during his career. He witnessed the eras of seven U.S. presidents, 16 Air Force chiefs of staff, 14 Chief Master Sergeants of the Air Force, 14 Air National Guard directors, 11 commanders of the 122nd FW, and all nine of the 122nd FW command chiefs. He deployed around the world in support of Joint Task Force-Bravo in Honduras, Operations DESERT STORM, RESTORE HOPE, SOUTHERN WATCH, NORTHERN WATCH, ENDURING FREEDOM, INHERENT RESOLVE, ENDURING SENTINEL, SPARTAN SHIELD, POSEIDON ARCHER and other assignments and major military exercises.
Dye credited his success to his wife, children, parents, friends and coworkers who supported him over the years. He also illustrated the importance of making it a habit to build a legacy by asking himself three questions every day: “What did I learn today? What did I teach today? What impact did I have today?”
“We will miss him dearly,” said Col. Nathaniel Sunderland, 122nd Operations Group commander. “His expertise and knowledge that he brought on this base over the years will be hard to replace.”
