CAMP SCHWAB, Japan – U.S. Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 4 marked a major milestone in the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030 initiative Nov. 14, 2025, during an activation ceremony for three newly established companies.
The activation of Headquarters Company, Alpha Company and General Service Company, reflects how CLB-4 is restructuring to build lighter, faster and more resilient logistics formations that directly impact III Marine Expeditionary Force’s role as a stand-in force in the first island chain.
Lt. Col. Nathan J. Green, commanding officer of CLB-4, opened the ceremony by highlighting the battalion’s history. He traced its origins to 2006, when the Marine Logistics Groups were established, and noted that earlier organizations, including the Force Service Support Groups, used different structures and designations that have shifted over time.
Green said the latest changes mark the first major reorganization within CLB-4 driven directly by Force Design 2030.
“This is about outpacing our adversaries in a rapidly evolving operating environment,” he said, adding that the 39th Commandant of the Marine Corps described Force Design not as an endstate but a journey that ensures we adapt faster than our adversaries.
During the ceremony, Green also announced the creation of two new Combat Logistics Companies within the battalion. Capt. Micrum is leading efforts to build Alpha Company, and Bravo Company is expected to be established from that structure, eventually giving CLB-4 a fourth company.
“We’re focused on what the regimental combat team needs right now to support its mission,” Green said. “If we have to change again, we’ll change again.”
He said the exact appearance of the battalion’s formations matters less than its ability to sustain 4th Marine Regiment in combat during field operations.
Lt. Col. Green went on to say, “[CLB-4 and CLR-3] will be in the fight together, and because of what you’ve proven over the last 18 months, they will have what they need to take the fight to the enemy. I’m proud to stand in front of this new formation.”
The ceremony served as a tangible example of Force Design in action. The restructuring supports the Corps-wide transition toward modular, distributed and resilient logistics elements prepared for the contested maritime operations and peer threats in the first island chain.
Green said the battalion’s structure will continue to evolve as Marines learn from exercises, joint operations and experimentation.
By developing scalable Combat Logistics Companies within a reinforced battalion, CLB-4 is positioned to sustain 4th Marine Regiment as a stand-in force in the Indo-Pacific and support modern naval expeditionary warfare, he said.
