Hurlburt's medical team launches new “Touch the Mission” program

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla.— Air Commandos assigned to the 1st Special Operation Medical Group experienced the first iteration of “Touch the Mission,” an interactive immersion program at Hurlburt Field, Florida, Oct. 22, 2025.

With the medical group’s priority of ‘Right Care, Right Way, Supporting Combat Power,’ the program was designed to integrate medical care providers into the units they serve across base, giving them the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into their patients' daily operations and bridge the gap between mission demands and medical care.

“These events directly connect medical personnel to the patients they serve,” a 1st Special Operations Wing flight medicine flight commander said. “This enables the patients and units to highlight their achievements while giving medics a greater appreciation for the impact they have on mission readiness and success.”

With this firsthand perspective, medical personnel aim to translate knowledge into impactful action.

“This enhanced awareness allows medical professionals to deliver more targeted and proactive care, optimizing health and well-being,” the flight commander added. “Given that medical support is integral to mission success, this program plays a vital role in ensuring a rapidly deployable and capable force.”

Medical personnel visited various units across base to learn about the AC-130J Ghostrider gunship and MC-130J Commando II missions, airfield management, fire department operations and security forces, including military working dogs.

Participants ranged from seasoned medics to Airmen just beginning their careers.

“As a new Airman, I found the [immersion program] to be very helpful because I haven’t had the opportunity to truly understand what our patients do on a daily basis,” a flight medicine technician said. “Being able to see where they work and ask them questions has been insightful, allowing us to provide more well-rounded healthcare.”

According to the technician, part of their job is responding to inflight emergencies and coordinating with other units on base like airfield management.

“Getting to see [airfield management’s] procedures and the chain of incident response on their side gave me a bigger picture of how we all work together which further allows us to maintain mission readiness,” the technician explained.

According to the flight commander, the “Touch the Mission” program will be a biannual event that continuously educates medical personnel by giving them the opportunity to see how their work impacts their patients and contributes to the success of Hurlburt’s mission.

“The medical group is committed to remaining connected to knowing and serving the Hurlburt Airmen and their families who accomplish the mission,” the flight commander added. “We want our medical personnel to cultivate a greater understanding of the significant contributions they make to our partners’ success in achieving the 1 SOW mission by providing the Right Care in the Right Way.”
