Marine Corps 250th Stamp Dedicated at Armed Forces Run in Jacksonville
The U.S. Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary was commemorated Nov. 15 with the unveiling of the Marine Corps 250th stamp during the Armed Forces Run 10K Tri Bridge Challenge and Veterans 5K in Jacksonville, Florida.
After the Blount Island Command color guard presented the colors during the "Star-Spangled Banner," thousands of runners set off across three Jacksonville bridges, spanning the St. Johns River between Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Marine Corps Support Facility Blount Island. The river flows by Naval Station Mayport before emptying into the Atlantic.
Sgt. Joseph Sortman and Sgt. Brian Michel Emile, both from Blount Island Command, received a first-day-of-issue plaque for the commemorative stamp near the USS Orleck Naval Museum. Sortman, the color sergeant, and Michel Emile, an organizational color bearer, were joined by Marines who participated in the 10K.
Postal service workers sold the newly released stamps at a mobile unit, while the military community celebrated both the Marine Corps’ birthday and its strong ties to Jacksonville, where the Marine Corps has supported expeditionary forces in projecting combat power for nearly 40 years.
The U.S. Postal Service issued the Marine Corps stamp on May 16 as part of a special collection honoring the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps. The stamp features the Marine Corps seal with the inscription “250 Years of Service.”
Sherwin Salla, USPS customer outreach specialist and Northeast Florida Postal Customer Council administrator, highlighted the event’s significance for both the Marine Corps and the local community.
"This year we celebrate 250 years of postal service alongside 250 years of the Armed Forces," Salla said. "We’re proud to bring these commemorative stamps to military communities across the nation."
