JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska — Select Airmen from the 3d Munitions Squadron, the 90th Fighter Generation Squadron, and the 525th FGS competed amongst each other in the 3d Quarter Mission Generation Competition.
The competition strengthens readiness by enhancing munitions and weapons load-crews’ skills, guaranteeing precise projection of air power any time, anywhere. In the third quarter of the year, this competition focused on a JBER F-22 Raptor arriving onto the flightline to be resupplied with fresh munitions.
This iteration was the first time they used aircraft actively being prepared for real-world take-offs. Each team was judged on timeliness, efficiency and accuracy, along with an evaluation of proper configuration and loading. Each squadron performed their individual functions ensuring the aircraft was loaded, maintained and ready for flight.
Crew chiefs, Munitions, commonly known as “AMMO”, and weapons Airmen formed different teams to demonstrate their skills in front of their peers and leaders. The competition was split into three portions. To start it off, AMMO teams showcased their capabilities by loading ordinance onto a trailer to be brought out on the flightline where the weapons teams then checked if the ordinance was properly assembled and loaded into the aircraft.
“This was my first time being able to compete in the mission generation competition with my co-workers,” said Senior Airman Christopher Esposito, 3d MUNS munitions system technician. “I enjoyed being able to come together to show not only our peers, but our leaders as well, how we are ready to contribute to the mission.”
The crew chiefs split into teams of two where each team was required to operate on the F-22. They made sure the aircraft were ready to be launched and loaded with munitions. Crew chiefs provide maintenance to the aircraft and recover them after flights.
Approximately 120 people attended the event including the 3d Maintenance Group leadership team.
“This competition shows what we are capable of doing in real-world Agile Combat Employment (ACE) environments,” said Tech Sgt. Conner Cech, AMMO operations supervisor assigned to the 3d MUNS. “These mission generation competitions give our Airmen the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance their skills so they can continue to provide air dominance to the Pacific Air Forces.”
The winners for the AMMO portion are as follows: U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joshua Hill, Staff Sgt. Skylar Kirchner, Staff Sgt. Joshua Hosier, Senior Airman Jaimelyz Torrens, Senior Airman Alejandro Landeros and Airman 1st Class Kimo Ray McDaniel, all assigned to the 3d MUNS.
The winners for the weapons portion are as follows: U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Willis Collier, Senior Airman Devin Shoff, and Airman 1st Class Christopher Torres, all assigned to the 525th FGS.
The winners for the crew chief portion are as follows: U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Isaac Defillipo and Senior Airman Carter Yeakey, both assigned to the 90th FGS.
